Notes for William WESTWOOD
William Westwood, together with his wife Bridget, sailed from England in the ship Francis, on the last day of April, 1634, when he was aged 28 and his wife 32. He was made a freeman of Massachusetts on 4 March 1635. He moved in 1636 with Mr. Hooker and his company to Hartford, Connecticut, or rather he arrived at Hartford before Mr. Hooker, and when the first Court was held at Hartford in April, 1636, he was one of the six men who composed it. Hartford was explored as Newtown in 1634, and the first few families moved there in 1635.
356 It was renamed Hartford in 1637. He was one of the wealthiest and most prominent of the first settlers of Hartford. He took the same position in Hadley, where he died 9 April 1669 at about age 63.
