He was born in Gilmanton Township, Benton County, Minnesota in 1905 and before 1910 he moved with his family to Morse Township, St. Louis County, Minnesota. He moved with his parents to Virginia, Minnesota by 1920 and on 1 April 1930 he was single, worked as a laborer at the lumber company and lived with his brother, Joseph and his parents at 622-11th Street South. ®72 He worked in the lumber mills, and later was employed as a plumber and steamfitter for many years by Virginia Plumbing and Heating. Subsequently he was employed by Heisel Brothers Plumbing of Virginia, owned by Bill Heisel, the second husband of John H. Matkovich’s widow, Judith. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and received the Past Grands Knight of the Year Award in 1976 from Council No. 1640, Knights of Columbus of Virginia. He was a member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local No. 589 of Virginia. After their marriage in 1936, he and his family lived in the upstairs of the duplex owned by his father-in-law, John Matkovich, at 314 1/2 3rd Street South, Virginia, Minnesota 55792. John and Johanna Matkovich and Anthony Matkovich lived downstairs at 314 3rd Street South.
